A bristle brush won't do it, what you need to get is a good, small sized pin brush as well as a slicker to be used only for getting out knots.

Good for you for wanting his hair a little longer - I think poodles look much better with a bit of length to their hair, but you're going to find you'll need to trim it or it'll not only be unmanageable, it'll start looking pretty bad. If you don't like the look of your dog shaved short, you can either trim him yourself with scissors or take him to a groomer and ask them to scissor him. They'll charge you more because it's going to take longer, but once he's been shaped, you can keep up the trim yourself.

As for brushing him, you use the pin brush. Have him lying on his side might be easiest. You need to be very sure you're getting down to the skin. When you don't, that's where the knots come from. If he has any knots, you need to use the slicker to tease them out. You need to use some care with this brush. I like to put my fingers between the dog's skin and the mat, so when you're brushing, the brush is against my skin and not the dog's.

Once his coat has been taken care of, a good brushing once a week should keep him looking good. You need to take special care in places like behind the ears, in the elbows and the groin area.

use a hard bristle brush sorry but if he gets knots you have to cut it. would u rather let your dog suffer in pain or have short hair think about it . ps- i have a toy poodle so i know what you're talking about so we just keep her hair pretty short . if you're really concerned about him getting sunburned then buy him some dog friendly sunscreen they sell it at petsmart or petco. for about $3-$5

There is a type of matte comb you can buy in the pet store. It works really well. It has sharp edges that cut through the knots/mattes. Be careful when using it as it can cut his skin if you are not careful.

I use a dog hair conditioner after bathing that helps soften the knots. when my dogs are dry, I use the matte comb followed by a slicker brush.

If he gets really dense mattes, you will need to cut them out as they are painful to remove.

Take your dog to a Petsmart, or other pet store. The people there will be able to help you pick the right products.

Also, poodles do need to be professionally groomed occasionally to keep their coats under control and out of their paw pads, ears, etc.

Hope this helps.

Use a slicker brush, the one that has little bent tines. This will help a lot cause it pulls out matts %26amp; loose hair that causes the matting. Brush daily.

If you can't keep up with the brushing that is required you might consider a pattern clip that looks nice on him. If you opt for this you will need to take your dog to the groomer every month or 4 to 6 weeks. There are more kinds of clips for Poodles than there are for any other breed. Ask your groomer to show you pictures of the different clips.

Between the slicker brush %26amp; mat splitters you should be able to keep the matts down.
