Cut hair short -- gradually or all at once?

I'm trying to work up the courage to cut my long hair short. I've never had short hair before, so I have no idea if I'll like it or not. It's currently wavy, about half-way down my back. I'm not exactly sure what short haircut I'd like but maybe Jamie Curtis ultra short crop (sans the gray hair) or a super cute Sienna Miller bob.

However, should I just gradually cut it shorter, a few inches at a time? Or, should I just bite my lip and do it all at once? I'm scared that if I go gradually shorter, I'll chicken out before I get to the haircut that I really want. But, if I cut it short all at once, I'm afraid that it will be too shocking.

Serious answers only please. If you've been through this before yourself and have good advice, I'll choose you as best answer! Thanks very much.

Locks of Love is a great organization, but it's not the only thing to keep in mind. If you enjoy getting your hair cut, do it gradually so you can enjoy all the in between styles.

If not, there are some benefits to doing it all at once (other than Locks of Love) Some say it's very liberating, like they feel free, or like a new person. So what if it shocks people? If you want it and like it, it doesn't matter. You do what feels right for you and you'll see that things always work out for the best.

Make sure though, that if you cut it, you get it short enough and that there is no question about the person who cuts its talent. Not everyone is good at sexy short hair. Ask others whose styles you like who cut it and when you're sure, go ahead otherwise someone who is not good at it will ruin the experience.

You will also attract different kinds of men than you currently are.

Best of luck I bet you'll look awesome.

go gradually, you might not like it so short, and if you go all at once then your stuck with it, at least gradual you have a bit of a choice to go shorter or grow it out again, and it wont take that long if you do wish to grow it out... i say go about shoulder length, thats what i think is most attractive

All at once so that way you can donate it to Locks of Love

i think you should do it gradually cuz then ppl will be like whoa and all eyes would be on you...well if you like having all eyes on you then cut it short but if you dont then i would do it gradually so that it wont be so dramatic that is just wat i think :) katie

Well, you are probably right in thinking if you go gradual you'll chicken out. What I'd suggest is trying on wigs, before you commit to cutting your hair. Try short styled ones, so you know what it will look like on you. Some people do not wear short hair well. I'm one of them. Besides, it's just hair. I get my hair cut, so I can have the growing out look. It'll grow back, and if you hate it, you'll know what not try the next time.

you should do it all at once. its really exciting when you get a new haircut and when its drastically different than your previous one, you feel so new.dont let go of feeling that excitement.

i agree with moredgirl... definatly cut it off at once and donate it. your hair will always grow back, but some people are less fortunate.

when I cut my hair I did it all at once because if you dont cut it all at once you will never cut it as short as you want it cause you will get scared. my hair is pritty short.
